Animal Aid's Mad Science
Awards - handed out each August for
pointless and grotesque scientific research
- are this year presented to 10 research
teams conducting lethal experiments on
primates. In projects lasting months and
even years, groups of monkeys were
deliberately brain-damaged with chemicals
and then set a battery of tests. Most of the
experiments ended with the monkeys being
killed and various body parts analysed. But
prior to death, the animals in our
highlighted experiments suffered symptoms
which included seizures, vomiting, diarrhoea,
tremors and uncontrollable body movements.

Partners In Crime

t has been confirmed that
Cardiff University have used and abused more
guinea pigs bought from David Hall and
Partners in more futile animal experiments.
The University have published details on
more than 13 experiments they carried out on
guinea pigs in the last 4 years but it is
believed that there were many more
unpublished experiments. One experiment
published in January 2001 was carried out in
association with Glaxowelcome (now
GlaxoSmith Kline). It involved forcing the
guinea pigs into face masks, cramming them
into restraining devices and pushing them
into chambers. They were then forced to
inhale harmful substances. These substances
caused breathing difficulties almost
immediately, for up to 24 hours. Many were
also also forced to breathe these substances
every hour for 48 hours continually for 18
days before they were murdered.

Some of the greatest
Animal Rights activists used to be hunters.
Then they woke up. Some of the most powerful
members of our movement used to work in the
meat industry. Most of us used to eat meat.
We changed our ways because we saw the
light, not because someone insulted us. This
must be top of mind as we write letters. If
we insult and alienate someone who may have
eventually, even years down the line, become
a supporter, then we are venting our anger
at the expense of the animals.

The Facts Against

Less than 2% of human
illnesses (1.16%) are ever seen in animals.
Over 98% never are.
At least 50 drugs on the market cause cancer
in lab animals. They are allowed because it
is admitted the animal tests are not
relevant.
When asked if they agreed that animal
experiments can be misleading because of
anatomical and physiological differences
between animals and humans, 88% of doctors
agreed.

Vivisection Kills

As students in a
veterinary and medical school, my wife and I
were struck by how differently we treated
the same diseases in animals and humans. For
example, humans were given penicillin for
infections but guinea pigs were not. Some
medications that caused birth defects in
humans could be given to animals with
impunity and vice-versa. In light of these
and other differences between humans and
animals, we began to question how animal
experimentation could ever hope to cure
human disease.
